Denon Doesn't See Comparison With iPod Hi-Fi

Denon Electronics marketing manager Jeff Talmadge has responded to Apple's claim that the iPod Hi-Fi speaker system could replace comparable offerings from companies such as his, telling MacCentral's Jim Dalrymple: "It is sort of confusing why they would throw it up against an AV receiver that was not made for the iPod ... Maybe we should be flattered that they picked us, but it's a completely different animal."

Mr. Talmadge added: "To be honest, no we will not be changing our strategy and we won't redo our product planning because of this." Mr. Dalrymple reported that the company has plans to roll out an iPod-compatible docking station that will hook to every new receiver they produce, in addition to possibly placing USB and Ethernet ports on their receivers.

"It [the Denon system] will provide so much more for the home theatre environment because of its onscreen metadata information, photo capabilities and video pass-through from the iPod that Apple's Hi-Fi doesn't do," Mr. Talmadge told Mr. Dalrymple.

Yes, they should be flattered and not concerned. The only reasonable explanation for such a bizarre thing as comparing the iPod HiFi to a Denon receiver is that Apple sees Denon as a widely-recognized name that stands for quality. But it goes no further than that... not even close.

Does the HiFi do surround sound, delivering hundreds of watts of power in the process? Can I hook a SACD player to it? Does it have a tuner? Can I play and control my DVD player through it? Can I dub copies to other devices through it? Will it do Dolby Digital II, DTS, THX, or other audio standards? Will the remote allow me to control my other devices?

And I wouldn't be caught dead with the HiFi in my component stack. It belongs elsewhere, like in the office or in a teenager's room. Denon has nothing to worry about.

Oh. THANK GOD. I was just so WORRIED about my crucial "onscreen metadata", I was just beside myself.....

You're right! Heaven forbid you get to see the name of a song from 20 feet away.
