Creative Embarks on UK Price War Against iPod

Creative is cutting the prices of its MP3 players in the UK and noting how they stack up to comparable iPods, according to Macworld UK's Jonny Evans. For example, its 8GB Zen MicroPhoto is now £149.99, £30 cheaper than the iPod nano, and its Creative Zen Nano Plus starts at £34.99 for the 256MB model.

Mr. Evans noted that Creative recently posted a loss in the range of US$55-$65 million for the quarter ending March 31, with revenues approximately $100 million less than the year-ago quarter.

I feel quite genuinely sorry for those people that buy one of these Creative players. I'm really not trying to be sarcastic, they'll be bought by people who don't really understand this 'ipod' thing and are likely to be exactly the kind of people who need the simplicity and ease of the itunes interface. OK, there will be some PCphiles that will argue anything Apple is against the natural order of evolutionary life and will argue that Creative's players have more functions and are better value for money. However, I suspect they'll have already bought their non-ipod and are not likely to buy another just because the price has come down. It does also seem like the wrong time of year to be doing this in a usually quiet sales season. I've jsut realised that could be the whole point, market them at a low price for a while then by the time anyone notices put the price back up again.

You really have to feel sorry for the non-ipod manufacturers, you can see the business meetings - Ok so it's got a radio more memory , longer battery life, lots of flashy bits AND it's cheaper then you tell me no one wants to buy it because its not an iiiiipod! What is genuinely fascinating about the ipod is that near monopolies conventionally stagnate innovation and development whereas Apple consistently adds features that work with an ease of use found in mature products. Well I'd better stop rambling - where was I - Oh yes - lay your bets now on how long Creative keep selling non-ipods.

Also, the also-ran's seem to be trying very hard to out innovate apple and each other like crazy, but so far to no avail. Apple are then able to pick and choose the extra features they want to add as and when they have

a) found a way to make it elegant and "just work"

b) believe there will be a market for it

As Steve Jobs says, it's saying no, and leaving stuff out that made the ipod what it is - not how many features they could stuff into it.

I have an Archos Jukebox since long before the Ipod; it actually still works..

I also own a clickwheel Ipod 20 gigs and a 15 gig touchwheel (still the best, in my opinion).

A little under 2 years ago I thought to try my hands on a Creative Zen...

It took me a while to get the deeper maening of its' name, but eventually I got it; the thing is best left switched off.

It sounds amazing, however.

But its' interface is terrible and finding anything on it is very, very hard.

The best part, though: I once (ONCE, actually) carried it in my pocket to find out when I got home

that the plastic part of the case had all but broken in 2. The case was held together by the aluminium

shields on the back and front...

So far, my experience with Creative players.

You'll probably understand that i'll get my next Creative player the day they start giving them for free.

Apple gets the right balance of features to match the sweet spots in the market. The others just seem to randomly toss features together.

OTOH, maybe it's just all about the clickwheel...
