Review - iSkin eVo3

iSkin has consistently produced some of the best cases for Apple's iPods, so it came as no surprise to us when we demoed the eVo3 case for the 5G iPod and came away impressed.

Like other silicone cases from iSkin, the eVo3 is perfectly constructed with plenty of thoughtful extras. Take the lightly textured surface of the silicone, for example, which both feels good in hand and provides extra grip, or the built-in dock connector cover for protecting your iPod's life-line from errant particles in your pocket or bag. Even the headphone cut-out is perfectly sized to show off the thin white trim around the port but none of the polished alumnium around it.

The eVo3 sports iSkin's typical and first-rate belt-clip, constructed of durable hard plastic that can rotate nearly 180 degrees (and stay locked at whatever position you desire) and is fully removable with no tools in about two seconds.

iSkin eVo3

The front of the eVo3 sports a large clear plastic peice that covers the screen and more, with a large cut-out for the click-wheel (which itself remains fully covered by silicone). This approach is more secure than simple plastic inserts for protecting screens, like Speck uses, but it's trickier to get correctly inserted and aligned. The actual design touch of this plastic piece is also debatable; we found it detracted from the simple appearance and proportions of the iPod, and bordered on looking a little cheap and tacky, but tastes differ.

The Bottom Line

The eVo3 is an excellent iPod case, delivering first-class performance, even if it comes at the expense of second-class design (assuming you share our lack of the enthusiasm for the clear plastic front). Wrap your iPod in an eVo3 and you'll feel totally secure knowing your iPod stands little chance of picking up nary a scratch if dropped. Meanwhile, the screen remains completely visible and clear while the click-wheel loses not a hair of sensitivity. iSkin has done it again.

The iSkin eVo3 is available in several colors: Atomic (Vibrant Green) , Sonic (Vibrant Blue), Blaze (Exciting Red), Arctic (Clear frosted), Eclipse (Solid black), and Blush (Fashion Pink). There are specific eVo3 skins for 30GB and 60GB iPods; order accordingly

Just The Facts

eVo3 from iSkin

MSRP US$29.99

Pros: provides excellent protection, very well constructed, superb belt clip

Cons: fitting the plastic piece correctly can be a small chore

I think this is a great case. The screen protector os crystal clear and doesn't scratch. I like that I can open up the bottom flap to sync or use the charger in my car. Only problem is the hold switch. I have yet to be able to move it with the iSkin on.

Bought my fiancee one as soon as I found a vendor that had any in stock (before Christmas). Was tough to find. High demand. But it's so worth it. Hers is hot pink. No missing it in a crowded room!

I bought this case and returned it. It's a great design, but the thing is an absolute dust and lint magnet. It's beyond ridiculous. The thing is almost impossible to keep clean. I finally returned it and bought a 5G Gel Shield from PacRim Technologies. It's not quite as think and sturdy as the iSkin, but it has an anti-dust coating that really works. If anything ever gets on it, I simply blow on it and it's gone.

I bought the evo 3 and like it but I foundthat the black one shows lint etc readily. I returned it and got a translucent white one and it's great. And it is tough to slide the hold switch -- I 'm thinking of cutting it out to slide it easier

Impressed you may be, but you didn't "demo" the case. You tried it out, tested it, reviewed it--whatever, but not "demoed" it. If you use the full word "demonstrate," rather than the lazy term "demo," you should see what I mean. To demonstrate something, you show it to someone else.

It's also apparently not "perfectly constructed"--see the comments just ahead of this one. I personally think it's ugly, but others may like the garish colors.

A suggestion: include a link to iSkin's site.

This case is pretty good, stays on a surface and if you spill water on it, your ipod will probably be OK. The design is very noticible (i dont know if thats good or bad). The 1st 3weeks you buy it the screen doesnt get scratched but after a while all the small scratches accumulate and you notice some scratches. Also if you wear pants the silicone (what the case is made of) case is difficult to get out of your pocket especially if your a girl that wears tight pants... or if you just wear tight pants because your emo. and sometimes you'll just want to listen to a crappy song because its so hard to get it out. oh and the hold switch sucks! i cant even get it on hold so i just quit trying and never put hold on anymore.

I returned this case after one day. UGLY plastic face plate, stupid access problem for hold switch, and lint problems are just the start. Lets just say it has poor design...period. I know iSkin controlls much market share, but watch out for review sites like this pandering to the "big dogs", its called propaganda.

I perversely bought the Blaze (red) skin because I like to be politically incorrect, It seems very protective except mine is missing the flap for the headphone jack. I HATE earbuds and wish there was something as inconspicuous but that stays in and doesn't get all tangled. Sorry for the tangential rant. Anyway, I had the same problem with trying to use the hold switch, so I cut along one side and the ends and made it into a flap. Now it is functional. It does get a little furry, but so far not too badly so far, I like the complete protection...not so sure I like the design.

Besides earbuds, there are "in-ear monitors" (IEMs), like those by Shure and Etymotic. They are a lot more comfortable, block more outside sound, and provide much better sound than ear buds. Most have a selection of tips so that you can pick the one(s) that work best for you. The ultimate is a custom-made IEM made from a mold of your ear canals, like high-end hearing aids. For more on these, see this article.

Another option eventually might be Bluetooth, which would get rid of the wires. I don't know if there are Bluetooth IEMs, yet. I think that there is a Bluetooth adaptor for the iPod, but it probably works with regular headphones.

Bought one, open case, half price . Dropped my ipod in garage yest on concrete from about 2m height. Freaked out, till I noticed no harm )). Best ipod accessory I got, who cares if it collects lint, my ipod is still alive!

Cadenza- I dont think it has a attached earphone plug, I thought the same thing as the instructions make it sound like it does. Iskin evo3 Seems to be great, I love the full (practically, besides the earphone jack apparently)ipod protection. Only problem ive found is when i pull it out of my pocket the silicone above the screen tends to dismount from the hard plastic screen protector, though Im good to go after a 2 second fix. It sure as hell beats the DLO crystal clear case I had. That thing was a joke, no screen or click wheel protection, and worst of all the friggen thing put vertical scratches on the back of my $350 ipod from simply pulling it in and out of the case a few times.

I love my iSkin eVo3. It protects my ipod from scratches and any other damages and I don't have to take my ipod out to charge or sync. I have a german shepherd and I haven't had any problems with the case collecting lint that could not be simply wiped off. The design doesn't bother me because I don't consider it that big of an eye sore. It does exactly what I want it to do, PROTECT MY IPOD!

Cadenza, reading your review was like taking a walk in the park on a bright spring morning: fun and refreshing!
