Windows Media Player, MTV Urge, iRiver the Answer to iPod + iTunes?

The San Francisco Chronicle on Monday published CNET reviews of Windows Media Player 11, MTV's new Urge music service and iRiver's Clix player, noting: "If you're looking for the Windows Media answer to iTunes and the iPod, this is it." All three received ratings of 8.0 or higher out of 10, which equates to "Excellent."

Of Windows Media Player 11, which is still in Beta, the reviewer stated that it's "a must-have upgrade. It's Microsoft's best jukebox to date, thanks to a thoughtful redesign, impressive performance and useful new features. It's much simpler, more visual and more like iTunes." It rated 8.0 out of 10.

Urge also received 8.0 out of 10. The review said, in part: "Despite a few glitches, MTV Urge is among the best subscription music services. It really shines with its programmed content, which includes hundreds of playlists and more than 100 radio stations." The US$9.99 All Access subscription doesn't allow transferring music to portable devices, but the $14.99 level does. Individual songs are also available for $0.99 each.

The Clix MP3 player, which sells for $200 and offers 2GB of storage, was rated 8.7 out of 10. The reviewer noted: "The Clix is a superbly designed MP3 player that's easy to use and packed with pretty much every feature: FM tuner, video playback, Flash games, voice recorder and other nice extras. We hesitate to call anything perfect, but iRiver comes close with the Clix."

I guess that will sell it.

And who is surprised CNet is rating a Windows Media device as superb!? The Clix is

absolutely not a superb device. Nice to have all those features, but except for most techies,

humans like simplicity, not an overload of functionality. When do they get it?

I doubt another DRM'ed model will be the one to beatdown the Apple grip on the mp3 market. Rather I see it happening with the move to all encompassing media players, where Apple is getting whooped feature for feature by Creative and their ZEN brand of PMC's.

Every feature except of course "sales"...why do you think that is?

Again with the FM tuner is supposed to be the ultimate feature. FUD! I can listen to an FM radio in my car without buying any kind of player. That's why I got an iPod is to listen to my music and not the dumb radio and there 10 songs over and over again. Creative is to stupid to put any kind of features that people would want and so far the iPod has whooped Creatives Zen every single time. This is another I've seen it already story and limits users of PC's who has the latest and greatest to be able to use it. Mean while iTunes lets PC and Mac users use there store for everything directly without having to go through a virus infected web browser like IE and Winblows media player.

I think the biggest advantage of a FM Transmitter is the ability to tune into TV programming at the gym, not necessarily the ability to listen to the radio anytime.

Didn't iRiver just get out of the mp3 player business?

Who is going to make the Clix now?
