Toshiba's New 200GB Drive Could Find its Way Into iPod Competition

Toshiba on Monday introduced a new 2.5-inch hard drive that can hold up to 200GB of data with two platters, thanks to its use of perpendicular magnetic recording technology. The technology was developed as a way to increase the storage capacities of hard drives, which were starting to hit their limit with older technology.

Toshiba said it will start mass producing the drive in August and will feature it during the Computex Taipei trade show being held this week in Taiwan. The company said that it expects the new product to find its way into not only laptops but also portable media players.

PC World pointed out the possibility that the new drive could "play a role in Toshiba's planned digital audio player to be developed in conjunction with Microsoft and Japan's DoCoMo for the Japanese market." Microsoft clarified that rumor on Monday, however, saying that such reports were the result of mistranslation.

Oh yes, definitely, as the market has cried again and again that it wants bulky music players based on 2.5" drives.

The ipod at most uses a 1.8" drive. It would be great if MSFT and its gang(sters) used a 2.5" device, what a brick that would be.

2.5" drives are for laptops, not small devices like the iPod.

Sounds perfect for this new device then, designing a device to be crap from the outset will be a lot cheaper than finding it out after it goes to market.

Note that the article is about iPod competition aka iPod killersâ„¢, not about the iPod itself. It could go in the larger format portable media players, for example.

It still won't be an iPod. If Apple ever needs it, they get it.
