Coke Teams Up with iTunes

Coca-Cola is working on a deal to add Coke-sponsored content to the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) only days after shutting down its U.K.-based Mycokemusic site. According to Digital Bulletin, Coca-Cola plans to offer U.K. consumers special iTMS discounts for purchasing its products.

Pepsi and Coke have used music as a marketing tool for some time now. Pepsi offered an iTunes promotion in the United Stated in 2004, and another in the United Kingdom in 2005.

Coca-Cola also has another music-related Web site, Stageside.tv, that offers recordings of live music performances and artist interviews as free downloads.

Hmm - everyone's getting into, and out of, bed with everyone else. I wonder what it means here - we have no iTMS, but we have Coke Tunes. UK no longer has MyCokeMusic, but it has iTMS.

From Coca Cola's New Zealand site:

To use the store, you will need the following installed on your PC:

- A sound card

- Speakers or headphones attached to your PC

- Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP installed (Sorry not Win NT, 95 or Macs)

- Windows Media Player version 7 (or higher)

- Internet Explorer web browser version 6.0 (or higher)

WMA. CokeTunes music is sold in the popular WMA format. We don't sell mp3 files as these do not allow for DRM that would protect the music.

iPod users. Unfortunately Apple has decided they would not support the Microsoft Digital Rights Management on their iPods. This means you cannot directly transfer CokeTunes music onto an iPod.

Compatible portable players. There are plenty of cool portable players that support our DRM, check them out at Dick Smith - take a look at iRiver products as a start. When shopping for a player, look for a statement like "Supports secure transfers from Windows Media Player" in the product specifications.

Mac users. Because Apple has decided they wouldn't support the Microsoft Digital Rights Management in the Mac version of Windows Media Player you can't use CokeTunes on a Mac.

Internet Explorer. For a few technical reasons, CokeTunes only works in the Internet Explorer browser so you won't be able to use the shop in a browser like Firefox or Opera. Internet Explorer is a free browser.

It sounds as though the New Zealand hand doesn't know what the UK hand is doing.

A plague on all their rotten teeth.
