Apple iPod Factory Would Set Good Example

Apple's ongoing investigation into "sweatshop" allegations at the Foxconn plants that manufacture iPods is commendable, but building its own factory would remove the potential for poor working conditions. Writing for BusinessWeek Online, Arik Hesseldahl thinks that the best way for Apple to ensure good working conditions is to build its own manufacturing plant in China.

The company that Apple subcontracts iPod nano and shuffle manufacturing to, Foxconn, was recently accused of forcing employees to work long hours for sub-standard pay in its factories. Apple is currently auditing the factories to see if they meet its strict working condition guidelines.

With a factory of its own, Apple could avoid the bad publicity it is getting now. "An Apple factory built to accommodate good working standards in China would give the company total control over conditions, environmental practices, and all the other things that manufacturers like to brag about these days," Mr. Hesseldahl says. "It would erase any concerns - warranted or not - about worker exploitation there."

The strong position Apple holds in the technology arena puts it in a position set working condition standards.

Mr. Hesseldahl said "The industry follows Apple in how computers are made and personal electronics are designed. Apple should also set an example for how their products are made."

I have a better idea. Apple should build its factory in Cupertino or Redwood City, or if the real estate is too expensive, maybe Gilroy. Apple should only have college educated US Citizens work in its factories. And Apple should provide child care, generously sized parking spaces, gourmet chefs, and free massages to its workers. For Apple's factory employees who are single, Apple should provide an after-hours dating and safe-ride service. For factory employees who have dogs or cats, Apple should let them come to work, as they will make their owners calmer and more productive if they can hang out. I know I wouldn't mind paying the extra $300 or $400 for an iPod knowing that Apple is being a good corporate citizen.

Exactly. Or, they could locate such a factory in a hurricane pummelled state to provide jobs and opportunities for recovery.

Or one ravaged by wildfires.

Or floods.

Or drought.

Why China? Their citizens can't afford Apple products.

Well Chinese labor is cheaper and I assume that the real estate is cheaper too.

Now that being said, are there any nob-biased studies on how much a product would cost if manufactured in the USA (the Northern Marianas does not count) using USA citizens and giving the owners/stockholders a reasonable and fair profit?

Or one overun with locusts or syphillis...

Let's not forget. The factory needs to be hybrid powered, constructed from recycled cow manure, and painted with used cooking oil.
