Microsoft: MP3 Player Reports are Speculation

Microsoft has responded to claims that it is planning on releasing its own portable music player to compete with the iPod by saying the reports are just speculation. In a BBC report, Microsoft representatives said the company didn't "have anything to announce at this time."

Earlier this week, reports began circulating that Microsoft was readying a portable media player in hopes of taking market share away from the iPod. Supposedly, this information came from Microsoft insiders and other representatives that the company deals with.

Along with speculation about music player, reports have surfaced that Microsoft plans to give iPod users the same songs they have purchased at the iTunes Music Store if they switch to the company's music player and download service.

Not having something to announce and claims of expeculation is not the same as saying that they are not making such a product. In reality they simply said "No comment".

To me this means they are working on it but they are not yet ready to annouce it. It also allows them to delay the project based on what Apple does and also gives them a chance to cancel the project before they announce. Mean time it is just speculation.
