22Moo Developing iTunes Kiosk

22Moo is designing an iTunes Kiosk dubbed the PodBuffet. The PodBuffet is being designed around an Intel-based Mac mini with a 15-inch touch screen. It will include an on-screen virtual keyboard, a customized application for accessing iTunes, and multiple dock connectors, USB and FireWire ports to accommodate all iPod models.

22Moo hopes the kiosks will end up in airports, train stations, hotels and shopping centers so that iPod owners can download music even when they are away from their own computer. There is no scheduled release date yet.

How does this work?

Whenever I plug my iPod into someone else's computer it asks "Do you want to sync to this library instead?"

I've always said 'no.' What happens if you say 'yes?' I've always been under the impression that your current music library would be erased from the iPod since you are now syncing to a library that does not contain those songs.

Is that not right? Or is this company expecting me to wipe out my 4 GB of music for the rest of my trip just so I can gain 1 or 2 songs from them?

And even if you CAN add a song to my iPod without erasing anything, I have no "offical" way to get the song back off the iPod once I get home. Yes, I know there are several programs on the 'net that allow this, but should any future Apple update disable these programs all of these Kiosks would instantly become "Rent a song for $1" Kiosks overnight.

Am I wrong about all of this? I'd love to be told so, but this is how I understand all this right now.

Good questions.

Change your settings on the iPod so that you don't auto sync when hooking up to another computer.

The song can be downloaded to the iPod's drive as a back up. Or to your iDisk or any number of places.

You have to give Apple your info when you login, it authorizes the computer you're on. Once your song has been transfered to your iPod, you would want to deauthorize the computer/kiosk before leaving. The song will onl work with your authorization.

With a simple set of instructions it should work pretty well.
