Sony PSP Gets Video Podcast Support
Thursday, July 27th, 2006 at 1:20 PM - by
Sony's PSP (PlayStation Portable) on Thursday received support for video podcasts, thanks to firmware version 2.80. The device already had support for RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and audio podcasts, according to IDG.
The article noted that the new firmware also adds compatibility with the .3gp audio format used by some cell phones, as well as more versatility when accessing content stored on Memory Sticks. Reporter Martyn Williams said that Sony is expected to add support for VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and the ability to boot games from Memory Sticks by the end of the year.
While the PSP and the iPod are very different devices occupying different niches, the PSP's ability to play back podcasts could bite into iPod's market share a bit (although, of course, no one buys an iPod just for podcasts). Meanwhile, Apple has been rumored to be interested in creating and selling iPod games, although they would likely not be in the same league as the PSP's offerings, since that device was designed with gaming in mind.
