AOL Offers Movie Downloads

AOL on Thursday announced that it now offers full length feature movie downloads. The company signed deals with 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group to offer movies, and also now offers On-Demand TV content from ox Entertainment Group and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Movies from the AOL Video Portal are priced between US$9.99 and $19.99 per download, and are viewable on Windows-based PCs and compatible portable players. TV shows are priced at $1.99.

Apple has yet to launch an iTunes Music Store movie download service, but analysts expect one to be introduced before the end of the year.

I still think these are doomed to failure. For a download service to work, it needs to either offer something I can't get through traditional means (like individual songs/episodes on the iTMS) or offer something I can get at a better price.

Downloads may be more convenient, but I just don't think that's enough.

$10-$20 is what I'd pay for a DVD. I'm certainly not going to pay the same price for something that has worse quality, has DRM, and can't even be played on any normal players. $5 would be about right.

Not only that, but to offer them only on Thursday cuts out 6/7 of the week! It doesn't make sense to offer the downloads only on Thursday.

That is ridiculous! What if it's Wednesday night and I want to watch a movie? Do they expect me to plan my movie time a whole week in advance?
