FCC Filing Reveals More Zune Info [UPDATED]

A filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has revealed a Toshiba-made MP3 player with the Zune logo on the back, along with the words "Hello from Seattle...". Photos that accompanied the filing clearly show a device that looks like the one previously shown in other images posted on the Internet.

The information, as revealed by The Register, shows that the device comes with 802.11b/g wireless networking, an FM tuner, a 1.8-inch 30GB hard drive, a three-inch LCD, a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery, and a USB port for computer data transfer and connecting to a TV-out dongle.

An article at AppleInsider, which shows even more photos of Zune in what appears to be a testing lab, detailed the device's wireless capabilities. Users will be able to broadcast music and photos to everyone within range or to only those who are their friends list. Up to four other users can receive the streamed content, which they have no control over until they end the session by selecting "any piece of music or video content," according to the Zune manual.

Toshiba said in the filing that it will manufacture Zune in three colors: white, black, and brown. It also asked in the filing that the player go through the FCC certification process last month, which is necessary to ensure that it doesn't interfere with other electronics.

An FM Tuner! That is way cool,

Do you think Apple has been resting on their Laurels? Watch for Apple to come out with a new iPod that is way better than the Zume.

The Zune looks like yet another 'me too' product in the mp3 player space, except for the wireless capabilities, which are admittedly cool. Music-sharing through short-range wi-fi is something that's been coming for some time now... let's hope the record companies don't strangle it in the crib in their usual short-sighted 'shoot themselves in the face' manner.

The big Q: Has Apple been working on the same thing all this time and will the next batch of iPods (due out before Christmas) debut with wireless capabilities too? If so, its game over for Zune (sorry Bill). If not, the Zune could capture a small but significant chunk of the market.

Be fun to see what Apple's got up their sleeves.

Why in hell did they put "Hello from Seattle" on it? Looks like Toshiba's confused as to where Microsoft is located. Ballmer is not amused.

It will be interesting to see if Creative sues Microsoft for infringement as soon as the Zune is marketed. Apple's settlement with Creative was brilliant.
