Microsoft Confirms Zune Made by Toshiba
Monday, August 28th, 2006 at 8:25 AM - by
An FCC filing by Toshiba for a portable MP3 player revealed hints that the company was manufacturing a Zune multimedia device for Microsoft - A rumor that Microsoft has now confirmed. A Microsoft spokesperson commented "Toshiba is manufacturing the device and the [FCC] report is legitimate," according to Techworld.
The spokesperson did not, however, confirm that Toshiba is the exclusive maker of Zune players.
Microsoft is planning to go head-to-head with Apple in an attempt to steal some of the iPod+iTunes marketshare. Its first player will include a 30GB hard drive, 3-inch LCD, FM tuner, and 802.11b/g wireless networking. Microsoft is also launching a music and video download service that will be compatible only with Zune players.
