iTunes Ad Credited For Helping Push Dylan's Album to No. One

Bob Dylan's latest album, Modern Times is number one on the U.S. Billboard chart, an achievement that was likely helped by his appearance in a new iTunes/iPod ad. This is Mr. Dylan's first number one album in 30 years, and, at 65, he's now the oldest person to have a chart-topper, according to The Australian.

Mr. Dylan played the song "Someday Baby" in the new commercial. The Australian noted that another cut from the album, "When the Deal Goes Down," is featured in a short film starring Scarlett Johansson, and the musician also hosts a satellite radio show. Modern Times was number three on the iTunes Music Store chart of best-selling albums for Friday, Sept. 8, as of 2:39 PM EST.

Not so long ago (August 28), some young whippersnapper posted a comment on another iPodObserver article:

Quote:
Yet, as a singer, Bob Dylan is about as outdated as you can get.

Baffles the mind.

Not a fan. Not an anti-fan. Just don't see the point in picking someone as an advertising icon who is musically lost to the iPod generation, most of who were born after 1980.

This article stands as sufficient rebuttal.

The ad is as much for Dylan as for the iPod & iTunes. It's also the first time that I can recall that an iPod/iTunes ad has targeted those of us over 40 (and, we can hope, introduced Dylan to a whole new generation). The U2 ad was a start, but this really does it.

Speaking of the U2 ad, I think that Jobs should have introduced the 5G iPod by playing that ad, FIRST. Imagine the reaction when the camera pulls back to show that the video is on an iPod. Pandemonium would have ensued.

I was a fan of his back in the 1960s, my teenage angst and all of that. In the '70s I lost interest in himand didn't purchase any of his music for a long time. However, "Things Have Changed" and I like most of this new album, kind of the bluesy, kind of his old stuff, kind of new sounding. I purchased it from the iTMS, you get some videos with it, check it out if you have not yet done so.

"People today are still living off the table scraps of the sixties.

They are still being passed around - the music and the ideas."
