Times Columnist Remembers Yesteryear's Apple Death Knells

"Whether they stand alone or are acquired, Apple as we know it is cooked. It's so classic. It's so sad." So declared a research analyst quoted by The New York Times in January 1996 and remembered by Times columnist David Pogue in a Wednesday blog post.

"Nowadays," he wrote, "Apple is a media darling. The critics like the company's direction, and so does Wall Street." Ten years ago, however, current CEO Steve Jobs had not yet returned to the company, and the media was filled with predictions of the company's imminent demise. Fortune magazine even said in February 1996: "By the time you read this story, the quirky cult company...will end its wild ride as an independent enterprise."

How far the company has come since then. Read more in Mr. Pogue's blog. Thanks to Macworld UK for the link.

Comment #4 mentions the Apple Death knell counter...

...One of the Mac news sites (i forget which) even had a recurring feature for years, the Apple death watch...

Though he got the name wrong and couldn't remember TMO.

Doesn't David Pogue write (or at least contribute frequently) to MacWorld? Probably didn't want to plug TMO.

Yes to the first. "Who knows?" in response to the second. However, both are moot because geoduck was referring to the comments section on Pogue's blog, not his commentary.

The funny thing... we still have the 'Negative Nellies' around, the same kind of folks who used to write about 'beleagured Apple', but in another form. Now they're guys who write or post about how the latest 'iPod Killer' will lay waste to Apple.

And as usual, they are always wrong.

"The Zune will pwn, you read it here first!". ROLFMAO. Yeah, right.
