iTunes TV Review - Battlestar Galactica 3.3: "Exodus, Pt. 2"

"Exodus, Pt. 2"
Airdate: Friday, November 20th, 2006

Moments totally denied to me in this otherwise kickass episode:

The part where Roslin reunites with Adama and they make out.

The part where Starbuck reunites with Apollo and they make out with just their eyes.

The part where Starbuck reunites with Adama and they don't make out, because that would be weird.

I guess the show wanted to hold back a little on its generally merciless assault on my tear ducts. But still -- I really wanted to see these key relationships touched on during the New Capricans' grand, emotional return to Galactica. Instead, we got a rather long, lovingly-rendered sequence in which Adama shaves off his porn star moustache. This was hilarious and awesome in its own way, but wouldn't you rather see him with Roslin? Maybe he knew he had to shave that crap off before he was ready to see her. I will just keep telling myself that.

Anyway, before we get to all the action, Tigh has to poison poor Lady Tigh. Never, ever did I think I would be connecting the words "Lady Tigh" with the word "poor," or with any other adjectives that might somehow convey pity or sympathy of any kind, but there you have it. Tigh and Lady Tigh are a strange, melodramatic, heartbreaking pair , and they belong together -- the show really sold me on that in the opening hours of this season. Their final moments together are mind-blowingly sad and rife with more fantastic, one-eyed acting from Michael Hogan. Awww, Tigh. Who will love him now? (Yeah, yeah -- settle down, fanfic enthusiasts.)

From there, it's pretty much wall-to-wall insanity as the resistance takes over the planet and the humans evacuate. Anders finds Kara and it's all pretty sweet, until she has to go back for Casey. Creepy Leoben forces her make out with him before she leaves and it's really disturbing and gross and documented via way too many extreme, saliva-drenched close-ups. At least she gets to kill him one last time. Kara returns to Galactica with Casey and quickly learns that the little tyke is some other woman's child, kidnapped by Leoben for his own nefarious purposes. I really dug this -- I know we were all speculating that Casey had some kind of weird Cylon connection, but I appreciate that the actual truth is much more ordinary, yet just as sad for Kara. The expression on her face as Casey is taken from her arms is just one of the episode's small, heartbreaking moments

Meanwhile, Maya realizes that series regular money is way better than the crummy guest star pennies she's been getting on this show and dies trying to escape New Caprica. See ya over on that other show, Maya! Of course, this clears things up for Lucy Lawless Cylon, Baltar and Six to discover little Hera amidst the rubble. Lucy Lawless Cylon is just as gloriously demented as usual, and it looks like she's decided not to blow up the whole planet like she was supposed to. I am on serious pins and needles waiting for Sharon to find out Hera's alive.

All of these things are very cool, but I've saved the best for last. After a pep talk from a suddenly lively Dualla, Fat Apollo ignores Adama's orders and swoops in just in time to save his dad, Galactica, and possibly all of humanity. It is so amazing and action-y and I might have started crying a little. OK, a lot. Apollo's act of bravery means the Pegasus gets destroyed, but I don't think he cares much, because come on -- that's the first time Fat Apollo's been completely awesome in a very long time.

And so, the humans are finally done with New Caprica. Adama is once again clean-shaven. Fat Apollo will probably become non-fat very soon. And yet, because this is Galactica, we know that the after-effects of the New Caprican ordeal will linger for a good while. And my only wish is that before we get to all the dramatic heavy-lifting, we see a little Roslin-Adama action. Just a moment, Ron D. Moore -- a tiny, potent thing, as fully-realized and memorable as all of the ones that make up this episode.

Is it just me, or does Sarah Kuhn look just like "Ugly Betty"? (Neither of whom is anywhere actual ugliness....)

I meant to say "Neither of whom is anywhere near actual ugliness...."

Next episode has to focus on Fat Apollo's effort to get in shape. I heard the perfect theme song watching the first episode of South Park Season 10b: Live to Win. Somebody please tell Paul Stanley that we're laughing at him, not with him.

But you neglected the coolest tactical scheme in the show. Dropping the battlestar into the planet's atmosphere to launch the fighters and then jumping the ship. Awesome!! Probably in no way possible but still awesome. Not sure the show's character's progressed at all. We're pretty much back to ground zero with only Baltar missing. Miss TIgh was a minor character at best as was Hera's mother. Rest of the cast resumes there place though I wonder what they'll do with Sharon given she played such a large part in the liberation. Like the look of next week's episode. Looks very ... human.

Not really. Sarah looks quite a bit better. Sexy in that 'librarian' sort of way.

You're right. The whole New Caprica arc, which was billed as 'something we're betting the show on' by Moore et al, ended up being more of a short, semi-interesting diversion. It did give Moore a chance to comment on the Iraq war, and there were a few gritty moments especially in the 'webisodes', but still, they could've done a LOT more with it. But not in just four measly episodes, and awesome as parts of them were.

I guess Ron lost his nerve a bit and wanted to return to status quo ASAP. The one nice thing is that continuing webisodes can explore what the occupation was like and do all the things that perhaps RM wanted to do, but was afraid to do in the regular broadcast, for fear of losing too many viewers who were 'afraid of change'.

Yeah, RM realized he was Ron Moore, not Michael Moore, and figured out his audience wasn't watching the show for political pointers. But it was certainly brave of him to hint at his dissatisfaction with The Administration over Iraq. He could up at Gitmo and get waterboarded over his defiance!

Actually a lot of people dug the Iraq parallels, I guess it just depends on your political leanings. Given that the majority of the country is against the Iraq war now, I'd say dissatisfaction with RM's move is restricted to minority, albeit a loud one. I'd agree that it does take some balls to do something like that, and for the reasons you mention. Bush could declare RM an 'enemy combatant' after all and 'disappear' him, a la Argentina if he chose to. Such is life under the current regime.

RM's move is also in line with the 'Star Trek' and 'Twilight Zone' traditions, in which 'sci-fi' premise shows were actually about current events. People we're okay with that back then, too. The only think I'd fault RM for was being a little too heavy-handed about it in some of the webisodes.

Hey Guest, I was kidding. You need to download the South Park episode about the deuce conspiracy. It would give you some perspective.

The majority of the country could care less about the Iraq war. Apathy is pervasive here. What matters is that our gas prices have come down. Worried about a few thousand soldiers getting killed in the last two years. Guess what: 50,000 people are murdered by drunk drivers every year in the US. How many cops are shot dead in the line of duty here in the US just this past year? How many people are killed in the US by Gang violence, Drugs, etc as well as other types of murders every year?

Somehow you liberals and conservatives think the general street american really cares about what you think. You guys are all screwed up if you think Iraq is the problem.

Keep the discussion about the review or BSG. Any further off-topic posts will be moved to the politics forum.

South Park kinda sucks these days, though. I lost interest after they attacked 'Family Guy'. They're also pretty knee-jerk conservative on most things, another turn-off. Its just gotten stale.

Why waw Gaius et al so concerned about the presence of a nuke on New Caprica? The planet had been abandoned by the time it was raised as an issue.
