Review - PowerBug for iPod shuffle

DLO's PowerBug for iPod shuffle allows you to charge your iPod shuffle from any wall outlet. Out of the box, the PowerBug supports both first-generation and second-generation iPod shuffles, thanks to the included USB cable that features the new shuffle's unique mini-jack USB connector (first generation shuffles plug directly into the PowerBug itself).

What DLO doesn't tell you is that the PowerBug will work with any dock-connector iPod, too, provided your bring your own cable. In fact, it will charge any device that draws power from a powered USB port, like a Microsoft Zune or cellular phone.

Why does this matter? Because the PowerBug is one of the smallest AC chargers we have come across, meaning even iPod owners without a shuffle in their line-up can appreciate the PowerBug.

With a product as straightforward as the PowerBug, the criteria for evaluation generally boils down to whether it works or not. Nonetheless, if you're the hair splitting type, you might wish that the bright green LED indicator would only glow when an iPod was connected, instead of constantly when the PowerBug is plugged in.

The Bottom Line

If you also want a charger to use in the car, check the Boxwave VersaCharger Pro, which handles AC & 12v DC. The original VersaCharger would not power the iPod, but this one will. Also, unlike most chargers, it does not block both sockets on a wall outlet. Like the DLO PowerBug, the VersaCharger Pro's prongs fold into the body. However, they fold the "other way," which puts them at the very end of the device's body. It looks like the PowerBug would block the other outlet.

Did you actually test the PowerBug with a full-sized iPod? I ask because:

1) The DLO page doesn't give the power output specs (mA). Some USB-port chargers will not charge some devices, including the iPod, because the power is insufficient.

2) Not all USB chargers will work with the dock connector iPods, even though they put out enough power. I have two car USB chargers that will not charge my iPod 5G, but will charge my cell phone and Palm TX.
