Microsoft's Bach: Zune Phone Was a Consideration

Speaking with analysts at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Robbie Bach, Microsoft's president of its entertainment and devices division, said of Apple's fabled "iPhone": "If it's great as a music player, then it's just another iPod trying to be a phone." He noted that Microsoft considered integrating cell phone capability into the Zune but decided against it.

"It's probably on the table of things for us to look at, but not the number one thing we are focused on," Mr. Bach said of the possibility of a "ZunePhone." So far, the Zune has struggled to compete against the iPod since its launch in November. Microsoft hopes to sell over one million units by June -- in contrast, Apple has exceeded eight million iPods sold during each of its past four quarters, with over 14 million of them sold during the fourth quarter of 2005.

Speculation has been rampant that Apple CEO Steve Jobs will introduce an iTunes-enabled cell phone, with even the venerable Wall Street Journal citing "people familiar with the situation" as saying that it will happen, with Cingular as the carrier, leading Mr. Bach to comment: "The latest rumor we hear is that it is going to be a MVNO phone and there hasn't been a lot of successes in that MVNO space for a lot of different reasons."

He added: "Historically, working with partners hasn't been a strong point for Apple, so maybe it will find a way to work around those relationships."

Mr. Bach's comments came via the Vietnamese publication Thanh Nien Daily.

That just shows right there that he doesn't even think proper convergence is possible. We'll see if apple can prove him wrong today.

Hope to sell 1 mil. Zunes by June? Didn't they aspire to sell 1 mil. by the end of '06 originally?

I guess you can never miss a target if you keep pushing it into the future.

If Apple is so lousy at partnerships then why are they doing so well with the music industry and the movie industry. Sure they have there complaints but iTunes is the biggest success ever. I think more companies are willing to try a partnership because they know if it works out there could be a lot of profits for the future. Microsoft is always trying to swing things the other way to make it look bad. They know they blew it with the Zune and are now making pitiful excuses for it including trying to make bad press for any future Apple product.

It won't work anymore Microsoft, people know what Apple products can do now and they love them.

Just another iPod trying to be a phone? First off, what other iPods trying to be phones are there? Second, isn't this exactly what Apple is going for? An iPod that happens to also be able to make phone calls? Too funny. But I guess this is better than if he just admitted to being scared to death of the iPod phone.

Ha! You mean working with partners isn't a strong suit for Apple as it is for MS!? Oh, you mean like those Plays For Sure "partners" you tried to screw over by introducing the Zune?

And using the strategy of "Oh yeah, we thought of that a long time ago" for every type of product you have yet to successfully bring to the market is simply childish.

So Bach is saying that MS wouldn't want to make something like the just-announced iPhone? Riiiiiight. Welcome to the social, indeed.

Hey, stop making fun of Microsoft! When I saw the new Zune, I thought of running right out and getting rid of my iPod for one of those new, cool, poop-colored models! Nice to see it was colored appropriately!

Well, black is the new white. No, white is the new brown. No, what can brown do for you where you want to go today where all your base are belong to Soviet Russia. Wait, an object in motion will stay in motion until the Rottweiler quits chasing. Hold on, an infield fly with two outs and runners in scoring position will not taunt Happy Fun Ball.
