iPO at Macworld - Jax Pimps Your iPod from the Inside Out

San Francisco, CA -- Prosoft Engineering has announced Jax for iPod, an iTunes plugin that wildly extends the iPod's capabilities. In addition to some fairly simple, useful tools, it also includes some wild and slick features. Even better, it's modular, and Prosoft is planning to add many new features in the months after its release.

Jax's workaday features include a configurable visulalizer and some helpful tools for getting album art and lyrics. It will also grab weather, stock, movie listing, and gas price information to deposit on your iPod.

The slicker features, though, include the ability to drag and drop videos from YouTube or Google Video directly to your iPod. Another slick feature uses a spacial map to help you research music artists, and learn the members of bands, which musicians collaborated with whom, and so on.

Researching music artists with Jax.

Jax for iPod will ship in February, and is also available for download. It is priced at US$49

It looks like Jax may be the successor to Life2Go (formerly Pod2Go), as, not only are the functions similar (with additions) but the icons are the same. According to the Life2Go website, it has been discontinued as of January 1, 2007. Life2 Go has been a very useful feature for me. I doubt that I would use the "music map," especially if the picture above is an example of what it would come up with, and I seldom use a visualizer. The other features are nice, though. The major issue would be the price. All too often, when shareware goes mainstream, the price goes up and the support diminishes.

More: Now, some modules of Life2Go no longer work. I don'l know if the developer dropped his/her subscription to the information sources (e.g., gas prices) or if that source just quit. Perhaps TMO could contact Prosoft to find out what their plans are for Life2Go users. Also, they have not said what the system requirements are. If it requires Tiger, that could leave a lot of Life2Go users in the lurch.
