Bill Gates Speaks to IPTV, Apple TV, Vista and Zune

Bill Gates talked about Microsoft's pending deal with AT&T to make the Xbox the IPTV front end and offered some personal views of the Apple TV, the costs of Vista, and the Zune strategy in an interview Sunday at Silicon Valley.com.

The Xbox was discussed as a potential consumer front end in a deal with AT&T and their IPTV product. The Xbox doesn't need to be modified to fit into this role according to the former CEO. When asked about the overall Xbox strategy, Mr. Gates offered his assessment: "It's working perfectly. We wanted to be the guy with the small box that costs less ... We wanted to not be a year late, not be a big box, not be a more expensive box. How are we doing on that?"

Regarding his view on Apple TV, he told a story about Steve Jobs: "I remember at a conference he was talking about how he didn't like going into markets where he had to go through somebody else's orifice." According to Mr. Gates, his recollection of the comment was Mr. Jobs' view of the broadband companies, cable companies and phone companies. "We love those guys," Mr. Gates said.

When a question came up about the efficiency Microsoft displayed designing Vista, Mr. Gates offered this one-liner: "Best $6B I ever spent."

Finally, when asked about the Zune, Mr. Gates described an approach taken with their previous products. "We knew what we wanted. Just like the first-generation Xbox, we wanted to get on the learning curve. We wanted to get credibility."

"We wanted to get credibility"

Still wanting. Still not having.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up M$ -- always wanting to shove their thing into someone else's orifice.

He's got something very wrong here. There was no success with the Zune! The latest news on the Zune is there wireless squirt apparently is very limited as the record labels didn't go for it so most of the songs won't work anyway! Stupid product anyways.

...and yet many claim Gates is a great philanthropist. What a waste...

I think Apple fans are too hard on the Zune. I see it as similar to the AppleTV, actually — a limited product meant to test the waters of the market. Neither device is a killer, but both have potential to grow.

And the Xbox as a video gateway actually seems pretty appealing. If done well, it could be a lot better than the AppleTV. I don't expect it to be done well (sorry, MS, you don't have that credibility), but there's certainly potential.

Does this mean that if someone shoots Bill they can use the defense that they were just trying to give Bill some street cred like 50cent?

This is the kind of stuff that seems typical of Bill Gates and Microsoft:

Umm. Didn't the ipod 'test the waters' for personal digital media players??? Ok so the Zune can squirt but I don't think you need to release a whole product + to test the waters... that's what focus groups and user testing is all about.

Seriously, the iTV tests the waters as a device that doesn't exist yet. The Zune tests the waters as Microsoft trying to rip off yet another product that someone else made popular.

If today's Zune had been released in 2000 then it would have been a hit. A huge, phenomenal hit. Nothing that was around back then was anywhere near as good as the Zune is. Capacity, screen size, screen resolution, color screen, etc.

But it didn't come out then. It came out years after the iPod had already proven the waters as warm, pleasant, and free of most parasites. If Microsoft feels the need to test the waters this late in the game then they're even more incapable of innovation than I had previously believed.

Yup. But its been widely known for years (if not decades) now that Microsoft is emphatically NOT an innovator, but is instead a fast follower.

Usually of Apple, but also of many others as well.
