iPod Accessories Turn Playful
Thursday, February 22nd, 2007 at 3:05 PM - by
Every possible iPod accessory that the human mind could think of has probably been designed, at least 3,000. Now, the industry is turning to the lighter side, developing more playful accessories, according to the New York Times on Thursday.
There is a growing number of iPod products that are more on the cute and irreverent side as opposed to being strictly technical and functional. For example, the KNG America "FUNKit", an animated robotic D.J. that includes spinning turntables, and stereo speakers that flash with blue lights.
"People looked and saw the popularity of the iPod and tried to figure out how to capitalize on it, like those scavenger fish that swim under sharks," said Shelly Hirsch, a toy industry marketing specialist and chief executive of the Beacon Media Group. Greg Joswiak, vice president of iPod product marketing for Apple, agreed, noting that the iPod has become "a cultural phenomenon."
Even though any accessory that connects with Apple's 30-pin connector must be licensed by Apple, it seems there is plenty of room to work on the edges with amusing products that may fly under the radar. One is the iPals, Speaker system, an ET-looking speaker system that plugs into the iPods audio-jack and doesn't require a license.
Many more examples are upon us. The iPod has become such an integral part of human life, culture and daily activity, it was only a matter of time before other more magical and humorous confections related to our iPod life would appear in the market.
