Quantum Research: No iPhone Suit In the Works
Tuesday, February 27th, 2007 at 11:40 AM - by
Although Quantum Research Group is watching to see if Apple's iPhone infringes on any patents it owns, the company is denying that it is preparing to take Apple to court, according to EE Times. Some of the technologies used in Apple's unreleased iPhone may appear similar to Quantum Research patents, but the company has no intentions of moving forward with legal action until can get ahold of a production unit and see if there actually are any infringements.
Quantum Research representatives stated "Until the iPhone product is made available for public sale, we have to make the operating assumption that no Quantum patents have been violated."
Apple Inc. is already involved in a patent infringement lawsuit with Quantum Research for technology used in the iPod nano. The company alleged that Apple is using capacitive sensing technology in the iPod Click Wheel without paying patent-related licensing fees. Apple claims that its iPod Click Wheel does not infringe on the Quantum Research patent, and has filed counter claims against the company.
The two companies are in discussions over the capacitive sensing patent. If a settlement is not reached, the case will likely go to trail later in 2007.
