Review - SRS iWow

SRS iWow is a plug-in for iTunes that magically processes music you play in iTunes so it sounds much better regardless of the speakers or earphones you use. It makes crummy speakers or earphones sound significantly better and makes good speakers or earphones sound fantastic.

How does it do that? You've got me, but according to SRS Labs:

iWOW uses the new SRS WOW HD processing to let you shape the sound of iTunes how you like it. It uses psychoacoustic processing to overcome physical limitations in your audio hardware to do things like get extra thump out of your speakers, extend the stereo sound field beyond your speakers, increase the height of your sound.

I won't pretend to know what that means, but it works and it works well. Every kind of music I tried -- rock, pop, alternative, jazz, blues, hip-hop, R & B, and everything in between -- sounded bigger, better, and crisper with iWow enabled. Put another way, when I turned iWow off, the same music sounded flat, dull, and lifeless.

iWow includes a handful of presets, as shown here:

Or you can create a customized setting by tweaking the individual controls:

  • The SRS3D Center control adjusts the volume of the virtual center speaker.
  • The SRS3D Space control adjusts the width of the stereo sound stage, simulating the effect of moving the speakers farther apart.
  • The Definition control beefs up the high frequency details.
  • The Focus control elevates the height of the sound stage, simulating the effect of moving the speakers up higher.
  • The TruBass level control adjusts the amount of bass processing.

  • and

  • The TruBass size control changes the low frequency limit of your speakers or headphones by changing the frequency of the low-pass filter.

I've been using iWow for months and haven't found a single significant issue. The only thing I'd like to see changed is that you can't currently save custom presets. And if you set the controls just the way you like them, those changes are blown away when you choose any other preset.

Other than that there's nothing I don't love about SRS iWow. But you don't have to take my word for it... you can download a free trial version and test it for yourself with no risk. Listen to your favorite songs while turning it on and off. If you're anything like me, you'll buy your copy before the trial period even ends.

The Bottom Line

Makes music played with iTunes sound significantly better regardless of your speakers or earphones. At $19.99 it's a steal.

Just The Facts

SRS iWow from SRS Labs

MSRP US$19.99

Pros: Improves the sound of music with any speakers or headphones, low price, unobtrusive operation.

Cons: Can't save custom presets.

I have to agree. This product does its trick very, very well. I've been ripping songs to AAC at 256 kpbs, and combined with this they sound like a dream. Very good stuff.

Yes, it does sound great. My big gripe (and the reason I haven't ponied up the 20 bucks) is that it only affects music played on your Mac. If you're using an AirPort express to stream music to your stereo, you're out of luck -- iWow won't do anything for you.

This was also a big drawback for me so I bought Airfoil (by Rogue Amoeba Software. Using the two products together allows me to stream the iWow processed music to my Airport Express. Now I'm a happy camper. Getting Airfoil adds to the price but it was well worth it for me to have the amazing sound of the iWow when listening to my stereo.

So, how does this compare to Plantronics' Volume Logic? Other than that annoying, several month-long wait for a version that was Universal Binary and would work with iTunes 7.1, I have been pretty happy with Volume Logic. Of course, they seem to ignore all my suggestions that they create a simple widget to control the software's settings, instead of that little Window that always gets hidden behind the main iTunes window...

I have both (iWow and Volume Logic. I have listened to them side-by-side many times. I prefer iWow. Volume Logic is not bad, but iWow sounds so much better that I never use Volume Logic anymore.

I have to second that. As nice as Volume Logic is, iWow is so much better. It's very easy to configure, and it just works so well. Hopefully they will add the ability to save your own presets soon . . .

OK. I have downloaded and installed the trial copy of iWow. This may mean much, coming from a guy that has mono hearing and imperfect hearing in his one good ear, but I think I agree that iWow has an edge over Volume Logic, sound-wise. However, it would be nice if there were a few more preset options, or you could save your own. Also, if anybody from SRS Labs is reading: THINK iWow DASHBOARD WIDGET!!! I prefer not to have miscelaneous, unnecessary windows open all over.

Hey guys. I've tried using AirFoil, but i noticed that while using it, the music is no longer in sync. This is very important to me, don't ask me why , but the songs need to match each other. Otherwise, what's the point of using the Express for audio, I could just stream it over my network.

Nonetheless, when using straight iTunes to controll the audio, the music syncs perfectly. However when i use AirFoil there is a 2 second delay on the airport express. Are you also getting this?

Is there anyway to make AirFoil sync, or is this just a something that has to be accepted in order to get iWoW audio going through the ExpresS?

Thanks,

Nick

I've tried to move this app from my old iMac G5 to my new iMac intel aluminum and it gives me the maximum number of license message. I've tried to uninstall it on my imac G5 but still the same problem on my iMac intel. Anybody has tried to do this?

TIA

Jeff
