Business Week: iPhone Harder to Build than Apple Thought

The April 12th announcement that Apple has moved some of its staff from Leopard to work on the iPhone raises questions about possible technical issues that may have cropped up with the iPhone, according to Business Week.

Arik Hesseldahl cited Jagdish Rebello, an analyst with iSuppli, who said that, " various iPhone suppliers have been told that the iPhone may not be available until the end of June." While Apple has bever given a specific date for the iPhone to ship, AT&T has been cited as providing a June 11 date, coinciding with the launch of WWDC. Refering to the possible end of June date, Mr. Rebello said, "We're hearing it's mostly an issue with the complexity of the device, and that all the component suppliers are making their deliveries on time."

The sudden shift in personnel may be due to a late wrinkle. "Typically the manufacturer and the service provider [at this point in time] are making sure the phone meets all its specifications, and that all the production glitches have been ironed out," Rebello said. "It's clear they have found some issues that they need to fix."

So far, Wall Street and analysts do not seem to be worried.

Even though the Leopard delay has been embarassing, the release of a bug-riddled iPhone would be a disaster. "It's not easy to make a phone," Paul Sagawa, an analyst with Sanford Bernstein said. "The hype has risen to such a fever pitch that to disappoint people with the product would be quite a black mark."
