Editorial - Dvorak is Rethinking, We're Redreaming iPhone

The Apple iPhone reminds John Dvorak of a dream he used to have. However, Mr. Dvorak says he's awake now, and the dream is gone, according to his latest column at PC Magazine.

"Not that many years ago, I described my tech vision of the future as a device that would fit into a cradle and serve as the basis for all computing. You could carry it in your pocket, and it would serve as your mobile phone, TV set, MP3 player, and handy GPS device. I would often discuss this imaginary device in public speeches," Mr. Dvorak wrote.

But Mr. Dvorak stopped giving the speech two years ago because the concept of a pocket computer doesn't seem attainable. And the iPhone is no better, in his view, at achieving the dream consolidation.

"In other words, it's wishful thinking. It won't be more than a passing fad as a fashion accessory, and it will never cut it as an iPod replacement or a phone. Yeah, you'll be the coolest person in the room when you pull one out and show it around, but that gets old fast when three other people have them and one person somehow has one that glows in the dark," Mr. Dvorak wrote.

So the controversial author has soured on the iPhone as just another smartphone that can't seem to measure up to his dream.

Perhaps the problem is not the iPhone. Mr. Dvorak admitted that he's stopped dreaming. Fortunately, Apple hasn't. Perfection in our lifetime is not the way technology works. Arthur C. Clarke once observed that advances are always slower in the short run than we expect but faster over the long haul than we could have ever imagined. Patience, enthusiasm, and more dreams are called for here.

The Journey is the reward.

Nice touch to the article.

Readers beware, of course, that Dvorak is well known for writing anything imaginable to get you to go to his articles. He wants you to be amazed at how wrong he is. Don't be.

The problem is Sites like this actually give Dvorak coverage and post links to his ramblings. He says stuff just to get you to visit the site his stories are posted on. In my view, posting a link to Dvorak is actually worst then Dvorak intentionally writing fiction he knows riles Mac users. At least, Dvorak has admitted to doing it.

Dvorak is a troll.

Be that as it may, the only thing lacking from the iPhone in his “dream” is the GPS part. I have to admit, i’d like to see that in the iPhone too. In due time. In due time.

The one thing Dvorak forgot to mention about the iPhone’s cool factor: It’s something that ordinary people can have that some of the richest folks in the world (e.g. Kermit and Uncle Fester) can’t afford!

People! This is John Freaking Dvorak you're talking about. You know, the guy who invented the Dvorak keyboard and wrote the back page on MacUser for years. A little respect.

Dvorak can bite my shiny metal ass.

His keyboard layout is NOTHING to be proud of, let alone have someone think it is...

If John C. Dvorak suddenly and simply ceased to exist at this very moment, the universe in 100 year, 1000 years, would not be one molecule different. He simply does not matter in any conceivable way. No great discoveries would be lost, no fantastic concepts would be lost, and on and on... Nobody would notice, not even his wife and kids (if he even has the social intelligence to have them).

He's just another troll, looking for hits on his website because he gets paid per page view no doubt. Just ignore him and maybe with any luck he'll just dry up and blow away.

Um, no Bosco. John Dvorak didn't invent the Dvorak keyboard. That was August Dvorak in in 1936. Have a little respect.

Great, just great... Given Dvorak's track record, the iPhone is going to be so disruptively popular that I'll have to wait forever to get my hands on one.

Why does anyone still listen to Dvorak? Or pay his salary, for that matter.

Why, yes. I was just listening to his Symphony Number 5 in F Major this morning on the way to work. An amazing piece from an amazing man. It's hard to believe he's not only a brilliant columnist, but also an accomplished composer and inventor.

this is an effing JOKE, yes? ANTONIN Dvorak was the composer (and yes, a good one) - JOHN Dvorak is a smug and talentless *dick*.

I'll read Martellaro any & every day, especially as a way of giving Dvorak-the-dick no hits to bolster his...well, you get the idea.

Dvorak (the name) seems to be quite popular in this discussion. Let me add to the popularity:

1. Antonin Dvorak (the composer, 1841-1904)

2. August Dvorak (the educator, psychologist and keyboard inventor, 1894-1975)

3. Radek Dvorak (the ice hockey player, 1977- )

and the ever popular

4. John C. Dvorak (the guy who can rile up Mac fans and thus drive traffic to his site)

Let's all try and enjoy the work of the first three Dvoraks and, hopefully, ignore the output of the fourth...

Thanks for clearing this up. There are too many famous Dvorak's out there. I remember in high school someone gave a report on guerilla warfare and how they could train these monkey primates to fight.

Anyway the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard was created by a brilliant man named Dr. August Dvorak and Apple placed a Dvorak switch on the old Apple II series computers... hopefully Apple will add a setting on the iPhone since it is based off of OS X which has a Dvorak setting on the Mac. August Dvorak died in the 70s so it is hard from him to stir up trouble these days now wouldn't it?

John C. Dvorak is simply an idiot and loves to bash Apple. He did NOT create the Dvorak keyboard and loves to bash the iPhone's virtual keyboard.

Then of course, Antonin Dvorak, the composer is popular as iTunes music downloads.
