USATODAY: iPod a Life Changing Device

USATODAY took a look at the technologies that have changed our lives over the past 25 years, and placed Apple's iPod in the top ten. The iPod came in at number eight in the 25 years of 'eureka moments' report, and earned its position by changing the face of portable music.

"Walking down the sidewalk hasn't been the same since November 2001, when Apple introduced its iconic portable digital music player. It wasn't the first player, but fans declared it the coolest and easiest to use by snapping up more than 100 million of them."

Although USATODAY was off by a month - the iPod was released in October, not November - it certainly got the rest of it right. Consumers flocked to the iPod because of its easy to use interface and sleek design.

The complete top ten list included:

  1. Cell phones
  2. Laptop computers
  3. BackBerries
  4. Debit cards
  5. Caller ID
  6. DVDs
  7. Lithium rechargeable batteries
  8. iPod
  9. Pay at the pump gas stations
  10. Lettuce in a bag

Other popular items included digital cameras at number 11, flat panel TVs at 13, PowerPoint at 15, Microwavable popcorn at 16, and TiVo at number 22.

Talk about not seeing the forrest through the trees... They list "online stock trading" and "Blackberries" but omit the "Internet" (or "Home internet" or "Broadband" or whatever they want to classify as an invention). Hasn't the internet changed things more than any other of these inventions? I mean.. who would have read the article if it weren't for the internet- the 500 people that subscribe to USA Today and a handful of bored travelers stuck at Airports?
