iPhone May Include Pre-pay Option

The iPhone rumor mill is in full swing, and the latest morsel to come off the assembly line is that the iPhone may be available to AT&T pre-pay Pay As You Go subscribers. Leaked information from AT&T indicates that the company plans to offer two prepaid options along with its postpaid contract, according to The Boy Genius Report.

In addition to the traditional postpaid subscription plan, it appears that AT&T will also offer the iPhone through its Go Phone Pay As You Go subscription package, and also through its Go Phone Pick Your Plan hybrid subscription package.

Keep in mind that prepaid options for the iPhone are only rumor until Apple and AT&T make an official announcement, and that's not likely to happen before the end of June product launch.

...as long as I don't have to worry about stupid eBay'ers camping out overnight to make sure that I can't get one on launch day!

If someone can afford the iPhone, why would they need the pay-as-you-go option. Isn't this usually for people who can't pass the credit check to get a real account? But now that I think about it, these are probably the same people who will finance the iPhone then never pay the bill and ruin their credit to buy something that they do even really need. I guess it's a never ending loop.

As far as I know.....and I could be totally wrong here....you won't be able to buy the phone without signing up for an ATT/Cingular contract. So that right there should stop the eBay idiots.

What if you already have a Cingular account, and want to switch from your current phone to the iPhone?

Predictable comment from a person can't see outside his or her own little world. No, pay-as-you-go is not just for people who can't pass a credit check. It's also for people who just don't need to talk on a mobile phone that much. Show me a monthly plan that costs $60-$80 a year. That's about how much I pay for Virgin phone service, and I use it as much as I want. I just don't *need* to use it very much.

The only issue there is internet access; unless pay-as-you-go has an unlimited internet plan, it will get very expensive. And if you don't talk on a phone much (I try to avoid it as much as possible) and don't use mobile internet, you probably don't want to spend $499 on an iPhone.

I do use mobile internet, but on my Treo 650, it's usually more trouble than it's worth.

AT&T will not be providing any concessions. They are going to be short stocked due to manufacturing and development issues. Apple & AT&T have had to reassure investors numerous times that it will release in late June (which is about as late as it can get without being actually past the "launching in Spring" announcement and still technically not be late). With all the hype and the Mac Fanboys creaming at the top of their lungs for it, the combined lack of supplies will not give AT&T any reason to give you a break.
