Review - RoadTrip

RoadTrip is an FM transmitter, iPod cradle, and car charger for any iPod with a dock connector. But RoadTrip has at least one feature that distinguishes it from any other FM transmitter I have tested -- its FM transmitter is removable so you can use it to broadcast music from any Mac or PC to any FM radio within range. That's pretty slick.

RoadTrip is easy to use -- just plug it into a power outlet or lighter in the car, tune your FM radio to an unused station, and slap your iPod into the cradle. Then, your iPod will be recharged as you listen to your favorite tunes through your car's FM stereo.

One nice touch is that the power plug is multi-adjustable, which means you can situate the iPod cradle in almost any position. I'd have liked it to be longer and sturdier but it was still pretty sweet. And unlike some other FM transmitters, RoadTrip can be set to all FM radio frequencies -- from 88.1 to 107.9. And its large LCD display and sizable tuning buttons make it easy to tune to the FM station of your choice.

The FM adapter snaps out of the cradle so it can be conected to and used with your Mac or PC with the included USB/audio cable. Other nice touches include several different adapters so iPods of various sizes fit snugly in the cradle. Finally, for what it's worth, there's also a belt clip, which I never used.

The Bottom Line

The RoadTrip is one of the better FM transmitters I've tested. Sound quality was usually quite good, and the adjustable power plug and detachable FM transmitter make it more versatile than other such products.

Just The Facts

RoadTrip from Griffin Technology

MSRP US$89.99

Pros: Good sound quality, adjustable cradle, removable FM transmitter module, large LCD display.

Cons: Power plug could be longer and sturdier.

The one I got had a removable extension piece which made the power plug about twice as long.

Do they not supply this any more?

Yes, they do, but I'd still have liked a few more inches... my lighter is tucked away under the dash and I couldn't adjust it to a comfortable position and angle with the supplied power plug and extension.
