ABC Begins Streaming HD on Internet
Wednesday, July 25th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by
ABC, as planned, started its testing of HD streaming on the Internet, according to Multichannel News on Wednesday. The test has begun with one episode available from each of Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, and Ugly Betty.
In May, ABC announced that it would beta test an HD resolution stream at 720p of some its TV shows in July. That test has quietly begun.
Macintosh users will be asked to allow the installation of ABC's plug-in to facilitate the HD stream. Before installation, the viewer is reminded that they will need a bandwidth of at least 2 Mbps, a dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, and a display at least 1300 x 770.
iPO tested the installation with ABC's episode of Lost, "Through The Looking Glass" on an 8 Mbps link with a MacBook Pro, and while there is some occassional, brief fuzzines due to the encoding, the picture looked very good, and there was no stuttering.
ABC is the leader in this technology compared to the other networks and hopes to build on that lead in the future.
