iTunes Store: Over 3 Billion Served
Tuesday, July 31st, 2007 at 8:35 AM - by
Apple announced on Tuesday that the iTunes Store has sold more than three billion songs. The news comes only days after the company reported strong third quarter earnings and that its music business is up 33 percent compared to last year.
The iTunes Store has grown dramatically since its inception, and is now ranked as the third largest music retailer in the United States -- above both Target and Amazon. The store catalog includes over five million songs, 500 movies, and 550 television shows, along with iPod video games and an ever growing collection of podcasts.
Apple recently began offering iTunes Plus tracks that feature higher quality encoding and are copy protection-free, making it easier for non-iPod users to play iTunes Store songs. So far, iTunes Plus tracks are available for EMI's music library, although Apple plans to have more labels on board before the end of the year.
