Blu-ray Movies Hold 2:1 Lead Over HD DVD

Movies on Blu-ray discs outsold those on HD DVD by 2 to 1 in the first half of 2007, according to Home Media Research on Tuesday.

The media magazine said that Blu-ray disc sales were 1.6 million from January through July 1, 2007. That compared to 795,000 HD DVD discs sold in the same period.

Since both formats were launched in the spring of 2006, an estimated 2.2 million Blu-ray titles have been sold compared to 1.5 million on HD DVD. HD DVD got an early start but recent popular titles like Casino Royale and 300 have helped Blu-ray with its recent lead.

Blockbuster, which recently evaluated rental patterns, has said that Blu-ray rentals were "significantly outpacing" HD DVD.

I love it. Back in late winter it was 7:1. A month ago it was 3:1. Then came the PS3 pricecut... oh and now it's 2:1. No wonder Apple is waiting this one out.
