Why hack the iPhone? According to the article:

  1. It's fun.
  2. It'll make your iPhone different and unique.
  3. It'll prepare the phone for the flurry of third party releases.

Of course, such an enterprise can be risky. Some users, however, are just too curious and creative to be held at arm's-length by the iPhone.
