Paramount Dumps Blu-Ray, Backs HD DVD

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation each announced on Monday that they will abandon the Blu-ray HD disc format and move exclusively to the HD DVD format on a world-wide basis, according to High-Def Digest.

"The exclusive HD DVD commitment will include all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment," the press release said.

This unexpected move is a boost for the HD DVD camp which has fallen behind Blu-ray in movie title sales. Some studio officials and retailers have been hoping for an end to the war, and consider this a setback.

The announcement by Paramount, while good for Toshiba's HD DVD format, will do little to settle the fears of consumers who are reluctant to embrace a possible losing format and are frustrated by the continuing war. Retailers would also like to see an end to the war in order to free up duplicated shelf space for the two formats.
