Review - Plantronics Discovery 665 Bluetooth headset

Last month I reviewed the Jawbone Bluetooth headset here, saying, "I think the Jawbone is a better Bluetooth headset than any of the Jabra, Motorola, or BlueTake headsets I've tried in the past year or two." I still believe that to be true, but I've since discovered (pun intended) the Plantronics Discovery 665, another excellent Bluetooth headset.

What I liked best about the Jawbone was that it sounded good to me and my voice sounded clear to people I talked to. The Plantronics Discovery 665 is at least as good in both respects. Plantronics claims it's because of its proprietary AudioIQ technology. Again, I have no way of testing the claim but here's what Plantronics says about it:

AudioIQ makes wireless conversations effortless and pleasant, regardless of the environment. For incoming calls, AudioIQ automatically adapts to background noise levels and intelligently improves the receive quality, clarity and volume level. For outgoing calls, AudioIQ reduces background noise for listeners up to 7-8 decibels, or by approximately 50 percent. It also minimizes interference from artifacts such as speech distortions to maintain exceptionally clear voice intelligibility.

I liked the way the Jawbone looks. The Plantronics Discovery 665 isn't nearly as pretty (as you can see here), but it's certainly not ugly, either.

Plantronics Discovery 665 has some distinct advantages over the Jawbone. One of my complaints about the Jawbone was that it wasn't particularly comfortable to wear. The Plantronics Discovery 665 is more comfortable and comes with several sizes of soft gel ear tips and an optional ear loop that I don't find necessary and don't use.

My other complaint about Jawbone was that I occasionally couldn't get it loud enough for me. The Plantronics Discovery 665 has always been loud enough for me. Last but not least, the Plantronics Discovery 665 comes with a dual purpose charger that works with USB at home and the lighter in my car. Plus, the charging pocket (shown below) pulses in cool psychedelic colors if a call comes in while it's charging.

The Bottom Line

The Plantronics Discovery 665 is as good as any Bluetooth headset I've tested, comfortable, and loud enough for me. If I could rate it 4.5 stars I would (but we don't award half-stars here). So even though I'm rating it 4 stars, you should know it's actually a 4.5 star product. And if not for the exorbitant price it might even rate 5...

Just The Facts

Pros: Excellent sound for you and your callers, dual-purpose charger, comfortable, loud enough even for me.

Cons: Costs more than any Bluetooth headset I've ever tested.

The Discovery 665 is available at MUCH less than the MSRP. Try $69 + shipping ($7.31 for me) at MWave (a company I've had very good dealings with), $72.98 (free shipping) at Amazon, and $73.99 (free shipping) at Buy.com.

The Discovery 665 apparently does not come with an AC charger, as the earlier Discovery 655 (which looks almost the same) did. One can certainly use any of the myriad AC-to-USB chargers, however.

Do note that the Discovery 665 gets quite a few mediocre-to-poor reviews on MWave and Amazon. A review at SmartDevice Central agrees with many of the MWave and Amazon reviewers that the Discovery 665 microphone does not work well in a noisy environment. iLounge also has a recent review of several Bluetooth headsets with the iPhone.

The box that I bought at a local store had the AC changer, the cig charger w/ holder and a USB changer. I am not sure why gslusher did not get one, but I have three means to change. Maybe I just got lucky..

I like this unit and I like the jawbone, and the jaba jx10, the only issue I have will all of these units and a Razor phone is that the the 665 and the jawbone see to have extra noise for my callers to deal with. It is like the anti-noise parts do not work. On my end I hear what the caller is talking about very very good.

The jaba jx10 seem to have extra crackle sounds on both ends of the call.

The Jawbow responds quicker then the 665, like when I hit the button to voice call a person, the 665 you need to hold the button down longer.

The 665 fits the ear very nice, almost forget I have it, now if it would work with my iPod so I can hear podcasts.

I use just one earbud for most pod cast listening at work, so I can still hear co-workers.

If someone know that the issue I have is the phone or a fix I would love to know about it. After trying 3 very good headsets it seems like it would be the phone, but I do not have a non-razor phone to try it on.

Note that I wrote "apparently." That was based upon Plantronic's user guide and website, as I don't have the Discovery 665. (I did consider its predecessor, the Discovery 555, at one time.) It's good to know that Plantronics now includes the AC adapter. My only Bluetooth headset is a Bluetake BT-400GX, which cost $30.99 at www.supermediastore.com. (They no longer carry it, apparently.) It was cheap and can be charged via USB without a special adapter, just a USB to mini-USB cable, the same as used for my Canon S3IS, Optura 50 camcorder, MacAlly Jbox external battery, etc. I haven't used it much--it was mainly to use with my PowerBook when traveling, to avoid the weight and bulk of my Plantronics USB headset.
