iPO Reports - Apple Introduces the Wi-Fi Music Store

Apple introduced the Wi-Fi Music Store on Wednesday. Customers with the iPod touch will be able to purchase songs on iTunes, via Wi-Fi. The feature will come to the iPhone later this month. Apple also announced an exclusive partnership with Starbucks for music downloads and free access to the Wi-Fi Music Store.

The Wi-Fi store will be available in 22 countries where the iTunes store is available. Songs purchased via Wi-Fi will be synced back to the host Mac when next connected to the dock. If users have only partially downloaded a song or album onto their iPod touch or iPhone, their computer will complete the download automatically, according to Apple.

"The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store is really fun -- you can browse, search, freely preview, buy and instantly download music right onto your iPod touch or iPhone," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Innovative products like this keep iTunes at the forefront of the digital music revolution."

A software update will make this service available to iPhone users later this month.

Apple has also been working with Starbucks for two months on a service that will cause a new button to appear when the iPod/iPhone customer walks into a Starbucks. Any song currently playing can be purchased right on the spot.

Apple and Starbucks jointly announced that iTunes access will be free in Starbucks stores. Howard Schultz, founder and chairman of Starbucks, on stage with Mr. Jobs, said that the number one request they have received is, "what song is that playing?"

After its debut in New York and Seattle on October 2, the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store will continue its national rollout to 350 Starbucks stores in the San Francisco Bay area on November 7; 500 stores in Los Angeles in early February 2008; 300 stores in Chicago in March 2008; and additional markets throughout the US later in 2008, Apple said.

This article will be updated if more information becomes available.

Partnering with Starbucks is a very cool idea! Will I be able to download podcasts via WiFi, as well?

So of course my question -- Will my iPhone be able to access the new wireless iTunes Music Store?

Yes, with a software update.

I love how they're making a big deal about "free access." Since when is it a big deal to let someone use your store for free? It's not like they're giving free web access, right?

Yes, I believe that Internet access will be free at Starbucks for iPhone and iPod Touch users.

It is a big deal, since friggin starbucks has had exclusive free wifi for Tmobile customers only. I wonder if there will be only iTunes access or full wifi access? This would save me $7 or whatever it's been everytime I'm in an airport without wireless.

The problem is it isn't free because you are paying for it with your T-Mobile bill. Personally, I do not get how places like Starbucks get away with charging for Wi-Fi access. Where I live, in Ann Arbor Michigan, every local coffee shop has free Wi-Fi access, and the coffee is just as good or better. Moreover, places like Wholefoods, Beaners, and Panera have free Wi-Fi.

I agree with the person who says this is no big deal. Starbucks is not letting Apple's devices access its Wi-Fi service to do as the users please. No the Wi-fi access is limited to connecting to iTunes. With that said, I do like the idea of being able to purchase the currently playing song via a special button. This is a great example of Apple exploiting its prowlness in software and hardware integration.

Other device makers are going to have a hard time competing with Apple's current iPod line up, including Microsoft. Especially with the iPod touch, as Apple is patenting the heck out of it, and it can leverage it's OS across its whole product line.

The WiFi Music Store is the real killer. It will boost sales of the iTunes Music Store a lot. Apple is already the 3rd biggest reseller of music in the US. With this new way to buy music it will quickly become the number one, taking an even greater power in the all important digital music market (where the major makes a lot of easy profit). They will be even more powerful against the major and others.

This is the real killer app. A really clever move.
