Review - invisibleSHIELD for iPhone

InvisibleSHIELD is a transparent precision-cut high-tech film coating that protects your entire iPhone from scratches and abrasions. I reviewed invisibleSHIELD for the iPod earlier this year and said:

How can you not love a reasonably-priced product that is easy to apply, does exactly what it's supposed to do, and comes with an awesome warranty? I like this product so much that I plan to apply it to every new iPod I buy from this day forward.

So when I heard that invisibleSHIELD was available for the iPhone, I ordered it immediately. The kit includes two precision-cut pieces of the film, two small bottles of SHIELDspray (which is more than enough to install the film), and a hard rubber squeegee for eliminating air bubbles as you affix the film to your iPhone.

The only potential pitfall is that it can be tricky to install invisibleSHIELD. But having read the printed instructions carefully, watched the installation video on the Web site, and being extra careful not to get dirt or fingerprints on the sticky side of the film as I applied it, my application this time was darn near perfect.

The parts in blue in this picture are the parts of the iPhone protected by the invisibleSHIELD film:

I was a little concerned that putting film over my iPhone's touchscreen would have a negative impact on usability. Much to my surprise not only did it not, I have come to believe that having it on my touchscreen improves my pointing and tapping accuracy a little.

invisibleSHIELD has been incredibly durable on both my iPhone and my iPods. According to the manufacturer, this is why:

The film has its origins in the U.S. military, where it was used to protect the leading edges of helicopter blades from wear and tear while traveling hundreds of miles per hour. Our proprietary film is a clear, urethane plastic (invisible, invincible) with unique properties that allow it to provide self-healing qualities and unparalleled abrasion resistance.

Unlike most traditional cases you don't have to take invisibleSHIELD off to dock your iPhone. That's the good news. The bad news is that it doesn't work very well with many traditional cases because it is much less slippery than a naked iPhone. On the other hand, that also makes it somewhat less likely the iPhone will slip from your grip. Anyway, if you want to use both invisibleSHIELD and a traditional case, make sure to try inserting and removing the iPhone a few times before you commit to the case. For what it's worth, I've had the best luck using my invisibleSHIELD-protected iPhone with holster-style cases like the ones made by Belkin (see review here) or Griffin Technology (see reveiw here).

I love a company that stands behind its products and InvisibleSHIELD definitely does. Every product has a lifetime warranty so if it ever gets scratched or peels off they'll replace it at no charge. And, there's also a 30 day money-back guarantee. That rocks.

The Bottom Line

I'm thrilled with this stuff. It really is invisible -- you can hardly see it at all as it protects your iPhone (or iPod) from nicks and scratches. I was concerned that after a while the film would begin to peel but that hasn't happened yet on my iPhone or my iPods. After a month of using only invisibleSHIELD to protect my iPhone, both the invisibleSHIELD film and the iPhone look pristine with nary a scratch, scuff, or abrasion. I still like this product so much that I plan to apply it to every new iPod and iPhone I buy.

Just The Facts

Pros: Protects your entire iPhone, extremely thin, nearly invisible, very durable, lifetime warranty.

Cons: Can't use most cases with it, challenging to apply perfectly.

A very nice product UNLESS you work with toner based mechanisms that once touched by will not then clean off. Unless maybe the one I had had some defect.

I bought this and when I first put it on, it looked great. But after a few days, small tiny bubble because appearing in the rounded corners of the iPhone and in the strip that runs around the front to cover the shiny chrome edging. When I put the iPhone in my pocket, the edges of the film would catch and hold lint. I really wanted something to protect the full body of the iPhone, but allow you to still see the design. Ultimately, the 30-day moneyback guaranty was closing in, and I decided to pull it off my iPhone and return it because I hated seeing my iPhoen like that. So I lost out on the shipping I paid to get it, and the shipping I paid to send it back, but the company was very good about promptly refunding the cost of the product.

After taking it off, I also noticed a much better response from the screen, both in zooming and in typing. I went to the Apple Store and just got one of those films that cover the front glass. The response is still great and it doesn't catch any lint on the edges. But of course, the rest of the phone is unprotected. Luckily the iPhone back is not the same shiny material at the iPod and doesn't scratch as easily. I woud not recommend this product.

I'm closing in on two months with this product on my phone and you can barely tell it's there. Both phone and invisibleSHIELD still look pristine. My iPod video has had the same invisibleSHIELD on it for six months, has never been carried around in any type of case (just my pocket or my backpack), and it still looks almost perfect. So after a total of 8 months of use (6 months for the iPod and 2 months for the iPhone), neither device has any visible lint or other debris and all of the edges are still holding fast. Besides, if it ever does begin attracting lint (or anything else that affects its looks or performance), I'll take advantage of the lifetime replacement policy and get a new one.

As for the feel of the touch screen, I had two iPhones for a while (don't ask) and was able to switch back and forth between them. I preferred the one with invisibleSHIELD. My finger taps seem to be more accurate with the film than without.

But hey, opinions are like belly buttons -- everyone has one. Fortunately the product has a 30 day money back guarantee so you can see for yourself whether or not it suits you. I like this stuff so much I'm going to pre-order it for all of my future iPods and iPhones so I can apply it on day 1 immediately after taking the device out of its box.

One question: why does one need this for the iPhone? I've seen informal "tests" where people tried to scratch the iPhone's screen with keys and even a VERY sharp knife--no scratches, at all. The back of the iPhone is much like the metal case I use for my Palm TX (which DOES need protection), which does not show grime, fingerprints, etc.

I just bought this skin... I must say I was apprehensive about its application, when I took all the bits out the packaging and looked at the skin I thought, " oh god this is gonna be a mission!"

well it wasn't really ... but it's also certainly not simple, and lining the skin up may take a few attempts, luckily the spray solution makes it fairly easy to redo should you not be hapopy with your first attempt.

from a functional point of view it's ok, I can tell it's a durable material, in fact it's pretty amazing how strong ths stuff is...proper military grade.

So those are the plus points, fairly easy application, good protection for the device, not reall loss of function.

The negative points, I'm not sure I like the way it feels, initially it felt slightly rubbery and I thought it would attact dust and make my finger gestures skiddish... granted it does feel better after the 24hour cure preiod, but it still makes my phone feel slightly rubbery and I'm not sure if I like it.

Now the major negative point, without the skin, the screen is preistine, I mean it's actually amazing how good the quality of the screen is... it's perfectly flat and smooth and reflective... you can't help but want to polish it it's so gourgeous.... the invisble skin ruins this for me... gone is my super smooth sreen and replaced by a dull, almost rough or slightly bumpy look ing screen, and thats just when the screen is off, as you fire u the iphone and look at the screen initially you don't notice the effect teh skin has had ont he screen... until you view something with a white background at which point it becomes clear... or shoudl I say at which point you realise the lack of clarity... gone is the picture perfect GUI, replaced by a grainy, blotchy dull finish... some people may not care about this, but I sure do... if it's annoying me this much after 1 day, it'll drive me mad by the end of the week and I'll have it off.

I suspect I will just get one of those film covers, at least they maintain the super glossy finish of the screen.
