Truphone Demos VoIP Call on iPhone
Wednesday, September 26th, 2007 at 2:35 PM - by
Truphone gave a public demonstration of its VoIP-over-Wi-Fi on Wednesday. The demonstration was made at DEMOfall 07 in San Diego.
The demonstation was driven by the fact that many people have sought a true VoIP solution for the Apple iPhone, and the demo sought to show that it is indeed possible using the iPhone's built-in Wi-Fi capability. There is no need to unlock the SIM in order to run this demonstration, however, Truphone pointed out that this was a demonstration only and not a commercial launch.
A YouTube video of a close-up demonstration has been posted.
"Truphone is truly the mobile operator for the Internet age and our aim is to see Truphone available on all cellular phones with the inherent functionality needed to make VoIP calls. The Apple iPhone is such a phone and we're pleased to be able to show it working for real," said Truphone's CEO James Tagg.
No date has been provided for the availability of a commercial application.
