UK iPhone Launch Draws Large Crowds
Saturday, November 10th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by
Apple and cell carrier O2 jointly launched the iPhone in the U.K. on Friday, and like Cologne in Germany, drew crowds for the popular handheld device. The line at London's Regent Street Apple Store began forming 26 hours before the launch, and was some 300 people long by the time the store doors opened, according to the BBC.
20-year-old Tom Jasinski was the first out the door with an iPhone in hand. "I got here 26 hours ago," he said. "It is a great piece of hardware. It is a great thing and I love it."
Store employees walked the line keeping customer excitement up, and the BBC went so far as to call the event "mayhem."
The iPhone is available in over 1,300 locations throughout the U.K. including Apple retail stores, O2 stores, and Carphone Warehouse locations. The combination iPod and smartphone is priced at £269 (about US$566.25), and services contracts with O2 start at £35 (about $73.67) a month.
