AT&T Quietly Adds Option to Drop iPhone Data Plan

Users who've signed up to manage their iPhone on AT&T's Website will find that AT&T has quietly provided the option to drop the iPhone data plan at US$20/month. You'll still be able to access the Internet via Wi-Fi, but you'll lose Visual Voicemail, SMS Text Messaging bundles, and Unlimited Data, which includes both email and web via EDGE.

After your log onto your AT&T account, look for this section and click on "Add/Manage Features."

Then scroll down until you see see this section:

One can save a little money this way, but be sure to read the Apple page on rate plans, linked above, to be sure you understand what you're losing.

So correct me if I'm wrong, but does this mean the choice of...

A) iPhone

vs.

B) iPod Touch

...now has a third option?

C) iPod Touch with Phone added in

I mean, that is essentially what doing this would create, right? If so, that's fantastic. I really want an iPhone but can't justify the internet price-per-month. Because of that I was going to get an iPod Touch with a regular phone. This new "C" choice might be just what I need.

Without the data plan then there is no reason why Apple should not put mail, google maps and the like on the iPod Touch, no reason at all.

Essentially that is just offering users AT&T's basic rate plan for the iPhone. That is good for people who weren't interested in using AT&T's network for the Internet.

I think you misread the screenshot.. this is not a option to turn off data plan at all... You need to look at how it is listed and indented.

I just called at&t. they say this option to drop does not exist, and if it did, Apple has to do it?

So, did any of the 'journalists' on ipodobserver think to confirm the story with AT&T before running excitedly to the keyboard?

I tried this out and it will drop the data plan but you lose your voicemail too, your phone will ring like normal but then just go to a busy signal after that. I had to call up to get the data plan put back on, you cant do it on the website.

What Data Plan do you have?

for the lowest one on the apple site its $1439.76 thats for the 2 years. Who pays this sort of money? Must have to be rich to afford this.

That $1439.76 is for unlimited data and 4800 SMS messages, 1080 anytime voice minutes, 120,000 night and weekend minutes (over the 2 years of course).

Turns out that's about what my work pays for my phone right now.
