iPhone Now Available in Germany Without Contract

Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile loosened its grip on Apple's iPhone in Germany just a little and will now let consumers buy the combination iPod and smart phone without a contract. The move follows Vodafone's request for an injunction against the rival cell carrier, according to Forbes.

As of Wednesday, T-Mobile customers in Germany will have the option of buying an iPhone with a two year service contract for €399 (about US$581.08), or €999 (about $1,477.97) without a contract. The company will also unlock iPhone SIM cards on request for new customers and for iPhones that have already been purchased.

T-Mobile moved away from its exclusive iPhone service plans after Vodafone cried foul and claimed the exclusive contracts violated German laws that let customers use their cell phones with the carrier of their choice. The courts sided with Vodafone and issued an injunction ordering T-Mobile to offer the iPhone without a contract.

Although Germany is the first country where customers can purchase an iPhone for use with any carrier, it is actually the second country to impose the ruling. In France, where the iPhone is scheduled to go on sale later in November, the laws required Orange to offer both locked and unlocked iPhone models.
