iPO Quick Tip - iPod touch: Fixing Inaudible Alarms

Apple's iPod touch is a great iPod and a good personal organizer. Relying in it for alarms, however, is a hit-and-miss endeavor thanks to an annoying little bug that can kill the audio for every alarm you set. That doesn't mean you can't use the alarm feature on the iPod touch, it just means that you need to know how to work around the problem until Apple releases a fix.

The iPod touch is capable of playing audible alert sounds to accompany alarms. Unfortunately, those sounds mysteriously fail to play after the handheld has been connected to a computer via USB. Here's how to make those wayward beeps and chirps come back:

  • Unplug the iPod touch sync cable to disconnect from your computer.
  • Turn off your iPod touch by pressing and holding the power button until you see slide to power off. Be sure to slide the on screen red power off button to fully shut off your iPod touch.
  • Press the power button again to turn your iPod touch back on.

The next time you connect your iPod touch to your computer, the audio for alarms will likely disappear again -- even if you have updated to iPod touch Software 1.1.2. Until Apple releases a new update to address the audio issue, get used to powering down your iPod touch if you rely on its alarms.

I've got an iPod photo, and this has plagued me for over a year. Same fix, too.

It's not just the new ones.
