Apple Opens iPhone to Hand-rolled Ringtones

Apple's GarageBand 4.1.1 update held a special surprise for iPhone owners. Users can now create their own custom ringtones and export them directly to iTunes.

The new feature supports user-created songs and recordings, Apple Loops, and iLife jingles -- no copy protected content allowed. It requires iTunes 7.5 and higher, and iPhone software version 1.1.2.

Exported ringtones will sync with your iPhone automatically, but can't be any longer than 40 seconds.

Way to grinch Christmas for the trolls and Apple SlamBoys who are always dumping on the iPhone

Seriously, this is good news. I have PhoneValet from Parliant and have created custom announcements using GarageBand for certain calls. Several of them are recordings made by family and friends so for example when Steve calls then PhoneValet plays "Phone call from Steve Jobs" in his own voice.

What a lovely surprise present - I have been creating tones through Garageband, and using iToner to put the tones on the phone, but they disappear each time the phone crashes.

Having an Apple created conduit will solve that problem.
