The Fate of the "Other" iPhone
Tuesday, December 18th, 2007 at 3:05 PM - by
Even though the Linksys iPhone seems to have dropped into obscurity, it's still on the market, according to Wired on Tuesday. While a year has passed, and both companies appear happy to share the trademark, Apple's iPhone is the success story of 2007.
Piper Jaffray has predicted that Apple will sell 3.5 million iPhones in 2007. Meanwhile, Linksys, which bought the "iPhone" trademark from Infogear, won't disclose its sales. According to Amazon sales numbers, the best selling Linksys iPhone is the model CIT400, ranking 742 on Amazon's sales list/
Despite the disparity in success, relations between the two companies are good. "There's no bad blood," said Karen Sohl, a spokesperson for Linksys. "We enjoy working with Apple."
In the February 20, 2007 settlement between the two companies, there was some language about interoperability. However, so far, there's been no sign of that. "It's ongoing," Ms. Sohl said. "We're looking at having interoperability, but no details of the specifics have been announced yet."
Despite the low profile. Linksys phones have received favorable reviews. Nevertheless confusion about the Linksys VOIP phones continues to make it difficult for the "other" iPhone to maintain its identity.
"It serves only to confuse people," said Mike Olson with Piper Jaffray. "When you're building a category around technology that consumers don't fully understand, like VOIP, naming a product after something hugely successful in another category will only confuse people further."
