C|Net: Apple & Google at Center of Telecom Market in 2007
Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 at 8:20 AM - by
Apple and Google, not Verizon, AT&T, or even Nokia, were at the center of the telecom market, according to a year-end retrospective at C|Net. Citing Apple's iPhone, as well as Google's Android open mobile phone operating system, C|Net reporter Maggie Reardon wrote that these two companies were pushing the market forward, even if neither had revolutionized anything.
The initial hiccups Apple experienced with the iPhone, such as the controversial price cut and initial problems signing up with AT&T, were not given a pass in the article, but it was the hype, anticipation, and the overall innovation of the device that made it important.
As for Google, Ms. Reardon said that Android is going to be a big player in the telephony market going forward. Speculation and interest in Google's involvement in an upcoming auction also enhanced the company's perceived position as a (possible) telecom company.
"To be fair," wrote Ms. Reardon, "moves by Apple and Google in 2007 haven't revolutionized the wireless phone market just yet. AT&T and Verizon Wireless are still the dominant carriers -- and Nokia is still the No. 1 mobile-phone maker -- but change is on the horizon, and small steps are already being taken."
