Blu-ray Player Sales Soar

Blu-ray player sales took a sharp jump during the week of January 12 to account for nearly 90 percent of the HD disc player sales. While the increase in sales compared to HD DVD players may be linked to the Warner Bros. announcement that it will support Blu-ray exclusively, analysts aren't quite ready to say that the movie studio was the catalyst, according to Twice.

Several media outlets began leaking sales numbers last week, and NPD Group has now confirmed the data.

According to the NPD data, HD DVD player purchases dropped dramatically compared to Blu-ray player purchases for the week ending January 12. Blu-ray players accounted for some 90 percent of unit and dollar share, while HD DVD players accounted for only 7 percent of the unit share, and 4 percent of the dollar share. Blu-ray/HD DVD combo players accounted for the rest of the sales.

While Warner's announcement may have played some role in the Blu-ray upswing, market promotions that included free players with the purchase Sony and Sharp TVs may have been a more significant factor.

"We've been doing weekly data for a long time, and we often times will see big shifts in sales for one week that doesn't necessarily determine a trend," said NPD Group industry analysis vice president Stephen Baker. "It seems to me unlikely that consumers would have made that kind of a choice that quickly based on new reports of Warner Bros. shifting from Blu-ray and HD DVD to Blu-ray exclusively."

Of course it does. Everyone I know is talking about how Blu-ray is the winner. I have friends who have sold their Xboxes and purchased PS3s on

this news. It is a huge point in this war and it will definitely cause increased sales. Why Apple hasn't jumped in yet I have no idea.

Meanwhile, Toshiba is advertising the sh#t out of their HD-DVD stuff. One must admit, having HD in the name may help them drive the message to the ignorant users that their product is what they're looking for - a DVD that works with their new High Definition TVs and gives them better picture. Blu-Ray's name doesn't mean anything to them, so they then must take time to learn about it.

In the end, this will be irrelevant. No amount of carpet-bombing ad campaign can reverse a steady trend.

It seems most likely that by the beginning of summer, one standard (blu-ray, obviously) will emerge a winner and Toshiba will announce the discontinuation of their format. This will give enough time to all the manufacturers to focus on building cheap BR players for the next holiday season. It would also give enough time to the studios to begin building their back catalogues to go with the new cheap players. And it would give consumers enough time to learn about the beauty of HD on optical media and get them ready to move up come next year.

The analysts are Stupid as always. Of course it was because of the announcement. People now know who will win the HD war and can now finally start buying the player of choice knowing that the media will become the standard. With this information the studio's will also see that Blue Ray is the obvious choice and finally standardize the HD media as such and then they will see a much bigger rise in sales. Especially if they lower the prices so real people can afford them. People don't care what the analysts think because most of the time THERE WRONG!

Selling their Xboxes?

What, they don't play any games on them?

Stephen Baker doesn't want to call it for BlueRay until his EBay auction for the HD-DVD player he is selling closes...

I wondered the same thing... maybe he meant selling the HD-DVD drive designed for the Xbox 360?
