Google: iPhone Tops Mobile Searches

Apple's iPhone accounts for the majority of Google's mobile-based searches -- 50 times any other handset. If other handset manufacturers can learn to match Apple's easy to use Web access, handset searches could outnumber traditional computer-based searches within the next few years, according to Financial Times.

The iPhone's search statistics were so high that it made Google do a double-take. Google's head of mobile operations, Vic Gundotra commented "We thought it was a mistake and made our engineers check the logs again."

For end users the numbers mean that Apple has figured out how to make Web surfing on a handheld device enjoyable, which is something other manufacturers apparently haven't been able to manage yet. For Google the numbers mean that there is real money in focusing Web-based advertising at handheld users.

As the iPhone becomes available to more users those search numbers are likely to go up, and if Apple's competitors can get their mobile Internet experience on par with the iPhone, the numbers will climb even faster. Either way, the numbers still look good for Google.
