iPO Scoop - Unity Coming to Apple iPhone

Unity Technologies announced on Monday that they will be supporting game development for the Apple iPhone. Unity is a 3D game development tool provider for the desktop and the Web.

The Unity engine is the core technology that facilitates visually rich, engaging 3D game play, whether it's on a traditional desktop, or on the Web at major gaming sites like shockwave.com, or now on the world's leading mobile device - the iPhone, Unity said.

"With iPhone support, Unity is poised to become the single source for game developers who want to create best-of-breed, 3D-quality games that can be easily and quickly ported to all platforms, including consoles, devices, PC/Mac, and now, the iPhone," said David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies. "Specifically, Unity's support of iPhone addresses the developer's need to create more and better mobile/portable games that support the consumers 'on-the-go' lifestyle."

An e-mail link, iphone@unity3d.com has been set up for developers who want to join Unity's iPhone beta program.

"iPO Scoop - Unity Coming to Apple iPhone"

How is this a "scoop," when the basis is a press release from the company? All press outlets had that at the same time, I expect. In fact, several other sites already have the announcement. Perhaps you beat a few by a few minutes or even an hour, but that hardly counts as a "scoop."

Scoop has more then one usage. It is proper to say something like, "What is the scoop on the next door neighbor?" When used as such, scoop is merely used to convey an information request. So the usage above is not necessarily wrong.

"Scoop" in journalism has a specific meaning, to wit:

"a news item, report, or story first revealed in one paper, magazine, newscast, etc.; beat."

Notice the "first revealed" part. Since this came from a company's press release, probably disseminated to hundreds of addresses, it would be difficult for anyone to claim a scoop.

Of course, perhaps John meant that IPO is having an ice cream party and he's bringing the ice cream scoop.
