Canadian iPhone Petition Launched

A petition page has been launched for Canadian Apple customers who would like to tell Apple and Rogers Communications that they want to buy an Apple iPhone. The petition was launched by iPhoneWorld.ca and iPhoneInCanada.ca.

The petition letter notes that the iPhone has been launched in the U.S., UK, France, Germany, Ireland and Austria. However, since February 2007, Rogers, in a form letter, has only said that they are working actively with Apple to launch the iPhone in Canada as soon as possible.

By signing the petition, the customer states: "We pledge that if the iPhone was released in Canada by Rogers Communications Inc. and Apple Inc, we would purchase an iPhone along with a monthly data plan."

The reasons for the absence of the iPhone in Canada remain inexplicable.

What's so inexplicable?

Apple has always said that browsing and using web/online functions are almost as important to the iPhone experience as the phone function (hello? real internet in your pocket?). Rogers has no unlimited data packages of any real use. Apple doesn't want it's product to be associated with Rogers price gouging because it will hurt the product's image in the consumer consciousness. Plus the fact that Rogers is the only GSM network in the country, apple has no negotiating leverage. Apple is no doubt waiting till after the upcoming Wireless spectrum auction happening in May to see which upstart will offer a competing GSM (with 3G) network ten allowing competition to bring down the cost of monthly packages to more line up with what is available in the US. There are two seriously major bids that have come in and one looks like it's AT&T (making sense now?) who wants to get back in to the canadian market after it sold Rogers back it's stake in the company in 2004.

It's coming, be patient. Jump in now and you'll get stuck in a Sh!tty contract for two or three years.

Websnap is right on, no mystery here, just a monopoly that can't be bargained with until the rules change.
