Forum: Australian Resellers Advised by Apple on iPhone 3G

Australian resellers have been informed by Apple about the details of the iPhone 3G launch there, according to a forum post at MacTalk, a Website for the Australian Mac community.

The post by "decryption" said on Tuesday that resellers were advised of the strategy for the Australian market rollout, namely:

  • Last week of June release
  • More than 1 carrier
  • No contract lock in
  • Current resellers will be able to sell iPhones

The anonymous author went into considerable detail, from his perspective, on what all that means, including the fact that the launch date coincides with the scheduled openings of the Sydney and Melbourne Apple stores.

In addition the author put some of the other items in perspective regarding the Australian market. For example, only Telstra operates an EDGE network, but all the carriers support a 3G HSDPA network.

While the post has to fall in the category of a rumor, the post has a considerable amount of technical detail that sheds some light on the Australian wireless market as a whole. Caveat Emptor.

Is it possible that the multi-carrier and no lock in only applies to Australia, that here is in the USA we will still have to deal with AT&T? Providing of course that the advisement is true.

Australian consumer law requires that phones be unlocked, or unlockable. Phone numbers are also the property of the consumer, not any specific network, so you can keep your number and switch networks / phones at will.

Unless some telco puts up an unlimited data plan for a reasonable price, the iPhone will be crippled. Data is ridiculously expensive in Oz.
