SoftBank On Board with iPhone in Japan
Wednesday, June 4th, 2008 at 8:05 AM - by
Japan's SoftBank is the latest cell service provider to get on board with Apple's iPhone following an announcement on Wednesday that it will begin offering the combination iPod and smart phone before the end of 2008. SoftBank's announcement helps firm up rumors that the next iPhone release will include 3G wireless technology since that's what the carrier relies on for both voice and data communication.
Like the other carriers that have announced deals with Apple, SoftBank is not offering details about contract pricing or the official launch date.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs is scheduled to give a keynote presentation at the company's World Wide Developer Conference on Monday, June 9. He is generally expected to announce the second generation iPhone with support for 3G wireless networks along with several other features that could include a GPS and video conferencing.
The long list of carriers that have confirmed deals with Apple over the past few weeks brings the total number of markets the iPhone will officially be available in by the end of the year up over 50.
